Houston Housing Resource and Houston Housing Authority Charity Golf Tournament Raises $25,000 Towards Scholarships for Residents

Houston, TX, June 16, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Houston Housing Resource (HHR), a non-profit affiliate of the Houston Housing Authority (HHA) held an inaugural charity golf tournament on Monday, June 11th. The event raised approximately $25,000 for the Carmen V. Orta Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide tuition assistance to college-bound students living in public and supported housing.

“It was great that HHA, HHR and our partners were able to come together and make the goal of attending college a possibility for so many deserving students,” said Houston Housing Authority President & CEO Tory Gunsolley. “Receiving a higher education not only benefits the students but their families and the entire community.”

Seventy-four golfers and twenty-six corporate sponsors participated in the golf tournament, which was followed by an auction of donated items by current and former athletes including an autographed baseball by Johnny Bench and a Houston Rockets 2011 team poster signed by each player.

“We wanted to do something to commemorate the memory of Carmen Orta who never forgot what a difference she can make in the lives of others,” said Houston Housing Resource Chairman Al Calloway. “This golf tournament is an opportunity for those living in public housing to help themselves.”
