Over 300 Participants Gather in Wellesley, MA for W.A.R. Against Ovarian Cancer
Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer Hosts Fifth Annual Benefit Walk and Run
Boston, MA, June 27, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer of Natick, MA, a national ovarian cancer organization, hosted the Fifth Annual W.A.R. (Walk and Run) Against Ovarian Cancer, Sunday, June 10 at Morses Pond Recreation Park in Wellesley, MA.
Started in 2007 by a family impacted by ovarian cancer, W.A.R. has grown to unite over 300 participants consisting of teams and individuals who all have been touched by the disease. Patients, survivors, and their families and friends were greeted at Morses Pond by the Ovations Staff, and were welcomed with a heart-felt speech by the organization’s President, Paul Flaherty, before starting out on the three mile walk and run. The event proved to be a rally of participants, in mostly teal t-shirts, supporting an underserved disease.
Ovarian Cancer will be diagnosed more than 220,000 times in 2012 worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, if ovarian cancer is found (and treated) before the cancer has spread outside the ovary; the 5-year survival rate is 93%. However, less than 20% of all ovarian cancers are found at this early stage for the symptoms of ovarian cancer are hard to detect and equally difficult to diagnose.
"Knowing this event started with just a few people only five years ago, and to see this many involved is truly an inspiration to us all," said Paul Flaherty. “Raising awareness and support for ovarian cancer initiatives is an uphill battle, but this walk proves we are making a difference.”
Proceeds from the walk benefit ovarian cancer awareness, patient programs, and funding research through Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer.
