Sonitrol Audio Security, Quick Police Response Spoil Jewelry Store Burglary

“When police reach an active crime scene, the more they know about the suspects, the safer and more effective officers can be,” said Doug Smith, president of Sonitrol Northwest Florida.

Tallahassee, FL, June 28, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Breaking into a North Florida jewelry store proved a bad idea for two would-be burglars, who had no idea that a Sonitrol audio security system detected their rooftop entry and the sounds they made.

At 2:42 a.m. on June 9, a monitoring operator at Sonitrol’s central monitoring station in Tallahassee heard movement inside the jewelry store. She immediately notified the Marianna Police, relaying information and recording the suspects’ conversation.

Knowing that this was a verified incident, not a false alarm, police arrived in just three minutes. As the burglars debated their next move, the pair’s conversation -- “Let’s barricade the front door,” and, “Do you want to go get back on the roof?” -- gave way to a hurried escape attempt.

Police quickly found the two suspects and arrested them. One had left some footprints that lead to a rear door which had signs of forced entry. Both men were charged with attempted burglary.

“When police reach an active crime scene, the more they know about the suspects, the safer and more effective officers can be,” said Doug Smith, president of Sonitrol Northwest Florida, which installed and monitors the jewelry store’s audio intrusion detection security system.

“The ability to verify an alarm in real time through audio or video detection technology gives police the advantage in speed, certainty and the element of surprise,” he added. “Knowing that they’re responding to a real incident, rather than a false alarm, they respond faster, and that’s crucial to our customers.”

With municipal budgets hard-pressed throughout Florida, verified response technology also helps conserve limited public resources. Last year alone, Tallahassee police responded to more than 9,000 false alarms, Smith said. So far for 2012, the number is over 4,000 false alarms – a drain on police staff and equipment.

Smith and his Sonitrol team provide fully-integrated electronic security solutions, offering verified intrusion detection systems, remotely-managed access control, Internet-based CCTV systems, and fire alarm system services.
