The Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation (JAJCF) Announces Sunset and Establishment of Cook County Justice for Children

A ten-year legacy and proven track record

Chicago, IL, June 29, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation Court (JAJCF) announced that, consistent with its plans established more than a decade ago, the organization will sunset effective June 30, 2012. As a critical part of its legacy, JAJCF will be leaving behind a new entity--Cook County Justice for Children (CCJC) to ensure ongoing civic investment in this pioneering institution.

“Our sunset was planned from the inception of JAJCF,” explained Board Chair, Duane Quaini, retired Chairman of SNR Denton. “We leave behind a ten-year legacy working in partnership with the Cook County Juvenile Court and other key stakeholders to help ensure a court that is effective, respectful, and responsive to the children, families and communities in Cook County. We are proud of our many accomplishments over the years which include the development of a nationally-respected mediation program, spearheading a Youth Empowerment Initiative to actively engage young people in the court process and institutionalizing ongoing improvement measures, training and partnership within the Juvenile Court.”

Cook County Justice for Children will be an independent nonprofit organization supported by private funds and will work to assure that the children and families who come to the attention of the court, either as a result of alleged crimes committed as juveniles, or alleged abuse or neglect, are protected, their development nurtured, and their legal rights ably represented.

The establishment of Cook County Justice for Children is a natural evolution from the work of JAJCF’s ten-year mission of reform and will build on the relationships and proven track record JAJCF established with the court and the community, most notably relationships with the leadership of all of the offices of the court, including that of the Chief Judge.

Continuing in the spirit of JAJCF, Cook County Justice for Children will work in partnership with the leadership of the court to promote transparency while protecting client confidentiality; advance effective court protocol and procedures based on national and local best practices; and raise public awareness and understanding of the court, the detention center, and the children and families they serve.

The newly-named Executive Director of CCJC, Lanetta Haynes Turner, brings considerable experience in the legal and child welfare system to her role. A graduate of Loyola University School of Law, Mrs. Haynes Turner spent her early legal career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the City of Chicago Law Department and as a staff attorney with Life Span Center for Legal Services, before taking the helm of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Cook County in 2007. “I am extremely honored to be named as the Executive Director of CCJC and look forward to partnering with the Juvenile Court and engaged community members to assure that the system itself continues to improve and produce better outcomes for our children.”
