)-- SfL+a Architects (http://www.sfla.biz) has announced the approval to build Sandy Grove Middle School, a future Lumber Bridge, Hoke County Schools educational facility that will be the first public-private partnership financed school in North Carolina and second of its kind in the nation. The 74,000 square-foot school will be designed to meet LEED Gold standards and will be a net-zero facility, one that returns more energy to the grid than it consumes. Innovative design and construction features include large photovoltaic and geothermal heating and cooling systems, high efficiency lighting, spray foam insulation, a whole building generator and solar panels. These measures will save Hoke County Schools nearly $35 million over the next 40 years.
Sandy Grove Middle School will be financed through a public-private partnership, one of the most cutting-edge ways to fund new school construction. Under a public-private partnership, the private sector assumes the risk of capital and resources for construction, while the public sector builds the facility to local and state standards.
The school will provide a progressive, top-caliber education to 600 Hoke County children. The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for Sandy Grove Middle School on Thursday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at 300 Chason Road, Lumber Bridge, N.C. 28357.
“SfL+a Architects is excited to begin construction on Sandy Grove Middle School,” said Ferris. “We are committed to creating high-performance educational facilities that are both environmentally friendly and budget conscious. Public-private partnerships are also a wise way to fund the building of new schools, and Sandy Grove will serve as a model for Hoke County, the state of North Carolina and the rest of the nation.”
- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consists of a suite of rating systems for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings, homes and neighborhoods.
- The total cost of the building, with utilities, will be less than $400,000 during the first year of occupancy.
- The solar photovoltaic system will generate 10 percent more energy than the building utilizes.
