Jingle Bells: It’s Christmas in July at Kenneth Hahn Park
Cooking with Gabby joins California State Assembly Member Holly Mitchell for "Christmas in July!" Saturday, July 14th, 2012.

What: Christmas-in-July is a free carnival of activities focusing on fun and fitness, health, education and literacy. There will be giveaways and Christmas gifts for low-income families from across the 47th Assembly District.
In addition to being treated to Christmas gifts and other festivities children and their families will be entertained by Cooking With Gabby who will be preparing “Gabbylicious Water” during 2 interactive cooking classes. These classes are aimed at teaching children and their parent’s not only how to prepare food, but also the history behind the foods used and the nutritional value of each ingredient. Cooking With Gabby will also be distributing 200 bags of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, recipes, and coloring sheets to the participants.

Why: Far too often, inner city communities are overlooked when it comes to healthy food choices, preparing healthy & nutritious meals, and the importance of physical activity due to a lack of education and resources. We must educate and raise public awareness about the importance of nutrition for residents in lower income areas. Unless we all work to bring healthy alternatives such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and physical activity programs to children ages pre-school and above we will continue to see an increase in youth obesity and type II diabetes in our youth.

Our mission is to eliminate hunger as well as unhealthful lifestyles that result in obesity and associated diseases; like diabetes and heart disease by giving kids, their families and communities the tools to make healthy choices.
