Adventure TEAM Challenge Returns to High Colorado Desert in 2013

World T.E.A.M. Sports' 2013 Adventure TEAM Challenge will be held May 17-19 in the high desert west of Fruita, Colorado. The annual multi-team, multi-sport event includes five person teams with both disabled and able-bodied athletes. In each team, one athlete must be a wheelchair user.

Holbrook, NY, August 10, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The high Colorado Plateau west of Grand Junction will host the 2013 Adventure TEAM Challenge from World T.E.A.M. Sports. The inclusive multi-team, multi-sport event will be held on Bureau of Land Management land near Fruita and the Colorado-Utah state line May 17-19.

Returning to the red sandstone lands along the Colorado River, the 2013 Challenge will take full advantage of the spectacular high desert terrain. The 2012 Challenge, presented by Alteryx, was held in the same region, with Team Lumber Liquidators successfully defending their championship against the largest field of competitors to date.

Directed by Billy and Helene Mattison, the 2013 Challenge will include river rafting, mountain biking and other outdoor activities, including rock climbing. Local Bureau of Land Management officials, the hosting federal agency for the Challenge, were favorably impressed with the 2012 edition, based at the Rabbit Valley group campsite. No difficulties are anticipated by the directors in successfully permitting the event for 2013.

“World T.E.A.M. Sports is excited to return to the Fruita region in May, 2013 for our Adventure TEAM Challenge,” said Paul Tyler, the non-profit organization’s President and CEO. “We look forward to our most successful Challenge to date.”

From its start in June 2007 as the Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure, the Adventure TEAM Challenge brings together persons with disabilities and non-disabled persons in teams to successfully navigate and complete an outdoor course. Problem-solving is critical to the success of participating teams, as each team of five includes two persons with disabilities – one of which must be a wheelchair user. Technology is also important, with hand cycles and complex towing systems used to safely and efficiently transport all team members across the course.

In the 2012 Challenge, team members dealt with sand and rocky sandstone terrain unlike that in previous Challenges, held at higher altitude in Colorado’s high country. The dryness of the desert terrain is also challenging for competitors.

Additional information regarding the seventh annual Adventure TEAM Challenge will be posted to http://worldteamsports.org/events/adventure-team-challenge/ in the coming months.
