MEGT Endorses WorldSkills Australia Contestants

The WorldSkills competition showcases excellence in apprenticeships and traineeships. Alexandra Vasiliadis needs help to compete in Sydney.

Mount Waverley, Australia, August 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Olympics are not over for some young Australians. For hairdressing apprentice Alexandra Vasiliadis, the WorldSkills Australia competition is coming up and regardless of talent, positive attitude and hard work, she just doesn’t have the $1,555 to assist with uniforms, airfares, accommodation and transport of all of her tools of the trade to get to and from Sydney. Despite the stresses of her father’s emergency heart surgery and the lack of funds, Ms Vasiliadis has taken on the challenge of raising the money needed with the same determination that saw her win the Gold Medal in the Melbourne Regional WorldSkills Australia Hairdressing Competition, 201.

Ms Vasiliadis is representing not only Victoria as the Gold Medalist, but also the community of Mount Waverley where she went to school and Box Hill Institute where she did her hairdressing training.

Ms Vasiliadis is determined. She was nominated twice as Apprentice of the Year for stages 1 and 2 in Hairdressing at Box Hill Institute, was awarded a Pursuit in Excellence Award for stage 1 in hairdressing, the only one to be nominated that year and has been practicing non stop for the upcoming national competition.

On August 29 Ms Vasiliadis is due fly to Sydney to represent Victoria in the National WorldSkills competition at Sydney’s Olympic Park.

If successful, she can apply for a BBM scholarship to travel to London and represent Australia and work within my trade.

This would open up amazing opportunities for me and my career,” explains Ms Vasiliadis. “This competition is a huge challenge for me as I will have to compete against other skilled hairdressing apprentices Australia-wide, all fighting for the one gold medal.”

Forget the TV challenge shows – this is real life. A real-life contest. With no product-placement advertising.

“Hairdressing is more than just a job for me,” explains Ms Vasiliadis.”I absolutely love what I do. I love creating and making people feel confident about themselves.

“I wish to take my career as far as I can go. My goal is to be an Australian Hairdresser of the Year.”

WorldSkills Australia Inc is a registered charity and as such, is able to provide taxation receipts which make donations tax deductible.

Ms Vasiliadis has only two weeks to go and does not yet have the finances to get to Sydney.
