According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s website, the MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. The MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and support services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. To participate in the MDA Lock-Up event, local executives and community leaders agree to be “arrested” for having a “big heart.” The “arrested” participants raise funds by having their friends, family, coworkers and other contributors donate cash for “bail” money. All of the proceeds go directly to the MDA and, as a result, the event raises thousands of dollars for people with neuromuscular diseases.
