Green Card Lottery Registration Begins This Week

The Congressionally mandated Green Card Lottery program makes 50,000 visas available for diversity immigration. The goal is to bring immigrants into the United States from countries that traditionally do not send many immigrants to the United States. These visas will be made available to eligible applicants after a routine green card application process.
Green Cards, otherwise known as permanent resident cards allow people to live, work and study anywhere in the United States legally and afford that person the rights granted to permanent residents in America. Green Card holders may travel to and from the United States with few restrictions, and as long as the trips are not too long, permanent residency never expires.
Eligibility for the Green Card Lottery is based upon the country that the applicant claims. Generally this is the country of their birth, but applicants may also claim either their parents’ home country or the home country of their spouse. Green Card Lottery applicants must also have either a high school degree or two years of experience in a profession that required at least two years of training.
Winners are selected at random by region and country. Countries that send more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past five years are excluded from the Green Card Lottery. No more than seven per cent of the visas may be awarded to emigrants from one particular country.
On May 1, 2013 “winners” of the Green Card Lottery will be announced. These lucky applicants will then begin the green card application process. If less than 50,000 of the original group of “winners” are ineligible to get a green card there will be a re-draw later in the year to give the rest of the available visas to the other original applicants for the 2014 Green Card Lottery.
