Student Refugee from Darfur to be Honored at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program

New York, NY, October 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Community for Education Foundation has announced that it will honor a refugee from Darfur for triumphing over tremendous adversity and actively applying the communication, decision making, and goal setting skills he learned through the organization’s Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program. Booray Adam Nour, who fled Sudan in 2009 after the Janjaweed attacked his village, will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and a Student Achievement Award in recognition of his accomplishments.

Adam is a shining example of the positive impact that relevant life skills instruction has on young people.

Since arriving in New York City without his family, Adam has gone from having nothing to being a college student who is training for a spot on the 2016 US Olympic track-and-field team. Adam attributes much of his success to the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program, which he says taught him the time management, goal setting, and study skills that are allowing him to excel both academically and personally. Adam currently attends Bronx Community College and hopes to have a career in medicine so that he can help those still suffering in Darfur.

“He is a truly remarkable young man,” said Eva Ostrum, principal of the New York City Department of Education’s College Bridge Program, which Adam joined after arriving in New York. “Not because of what he has survived, but because of who he aspires to become—a compassionate leader and member of society, devoted to helping others trapped in unspeakable circumstances. Adam embodies the values that Overcoming Obstacles promotes.”

Adam will be recognized at the 2012 Overcoming Obstacles Achievement Awards on October 25 in New York City. He will be honored alongside Martha Rivers Ingram, chairman emerita of Ingram Industries, who will be recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding leadership in business and her dedication to education and the arts.

Since 1995, Community for Education Foundation has honored some of the nation’s finest citizens for embodying the spirit of the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program. This year’s honorees join a prestigious group of individuals recognized at the event, including Muhammad Ali, Marian Wright Edelman, the 1999 World Cup Champion US Women’s Soccer Team, and CEO Kenneth Chenault of American Express.

About Community for Education Foundation
Community for Education Foundation is a nonprofit education reform organization that was founded in 1992 to ensure that all students learn the communication, decision making, and goal setting skills they need to be successful in life. To accomplish this mission, Community for Education Foundation developed the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program to provide educators with the curriculum materials, teacher training, and ongoing support that they need to teach students the skills relevant to their academic and social success. The organization offers the Overcoming Obstacles program at no cost to school districts through its Gifting Initiative. To date, Community for Education Foundation and the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program have positively impacted the lives of close to three million students nationwide.

In June 2011, Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott announced New York City’s enrollment in the Gifting Initiative. Community for Education Foundation and the Department of Education are introducing Overcoming Obstacles to all 850 public middle schools and high schools in the five boroughs.
