Two Charleston Students to be Honored at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program

New York, NY, October 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Community for Education Foundation has announced that it will honor two Charleston County School District students for triumphing over adversity and actively applying the communication, decision making, and goal setting skills they learned through the organization’s Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program. January Little of Burke Middle High School and Ervina Desaussure, a graduate of West Ashley High School, will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship and a Student Achievement Award in recognition of their accomplishments.

Both January and Ervina are shining examples of the positive impact that relevant life skills instruction has on young people.

“For someone who has experienced so much adversity, January has such a positive outlook on life and learning,” said Donna Taylor, a guidance counselor at Burke Middle High School. “He is a great role model for our students and he serves as a mentor to other youth. He keeps a smile on his face and his dreams in his heart.”

“Ervina has had a tough and challenging life,” said Laura Conroy of West Ashley High School. “You would never know by looking at her. She has intrinsic values that set her above many of her peers.”

The students will be recognized at the 2012 Overcoming Obstacles Achievement Awards on October 25 in New York City. They will be honored alongside Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley, who will be accepting an Achievement in Education Award on behalf of Charleston County School District. Charleston-native Martha Rivers Ingram, chairman emerita of Ingram Industries, will be recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding leadership in business and her dedication to education and the arts.

Since 1995, Community for Education Foundation has honored some of the nation’s finest citizens for embodying the spirit of the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program. This year’s honorees join a prestigious group of individuals recognized at the event, including Muhammad Ali, Marian Wright Edelman, the 1999 World Cup Champion US Women’s Soccer Team, and CEO Kenneth Chenault of American Express.

About Community for Education Foundation
Community for Education Foundation is a nonprofit education reform organization that was founded in 1992 to ensure that all students learn the communication, decision making, and goal setting skills they need to be successful in life. To accomplish this mission, Community for Education Foundation developed the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program to provide educators with the curriculum materials, teacher training, and ongoing support that they need to teach students the skills relevant to their academic and social success. The organization offers the Overcoming Obstacles program at no cost to school districts through its Gifting Initiative. To date, Community for Education Foundation and the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program have positively impacted the lives of close to three million students nationwide.

Since 2010, Charleston County School District has used Overcoming Obstacles in each of its middle schools and high schools as part of its districtwide advisory program. Due in part to the program’s success in Charleston County, districts in nine other South Carolina counties have enrolled in the Gifting Initiative, bringing life skills instruction to thousands of additional students each year.
