Hyundai’s Voluntary Fuel Economy Ratings Reimbursement Program

Hyundai recently adjusted its fuel economy ratings and as a result Van Horn Hyundai in Sheboygan, WI is offering its customers a reimbursement.

Milwaukee, WI, November 18, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Hyundai Motor America recently announced in a release that it will fund a reimbursement program for those drivers affected by its fuel economy ratings adjustment. Van Horn Hyundai in Sheboygan, WI is showing its customers that it cares and plans to right the error by reimbursing them for the money they should have saved on fuel.

“I sincerely apologize to all affected Hyundai and Kia customers, and I regret these errors occurred,” said Dr. W. C. Yang, chief technology officer of Hyundai/Kia research and development. “Following up on the EPA’s audit results, we have taken immediate action to make the necessary rating changes and process corrections.”

After discussions with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Hyundai decided to voluntarily adjust the fuel economy ratings on about 35 percent, roughly 900,000 vehicles, of 2011-13 model years Hyundai sold through October 31, 2012.

The incorrect ratings were the result of a procedural error at Hyundai’s testing facility in Korea. Hyundai is relabeling mpg ratings in showrooms worldwide to reflect the average 3 percent reduction in fuel economy across the lineup. The new numbers on all vehicles dropped from an average of 27 combined mpg to 26 combined mpg. Hyundai still remains as one of the most fuel efficient automakers, but know it must pay back its customer for its mistake.

Hyundai has put together a comprehensive reimbursement program for current and former drivers that were affected by the additional fuel costs. Customer will be given a debit card that will account for the difference in the EPA combined fuel ratings. The card will be based on miles driven and the cost of fuel locally, and to further emphasize its remorse, Hyundai will add an additional 15 percent to the full reimbursement amount.

“Given the importance of fuel efficiency to all of us, we’re extremely sorry about these errors,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “When we say to Hyundai owners, ‘We’ve got your back,’ that’s an assurance we don’t take lightly. We’re going to make this right for everyone, and we’ll be more driven than ever to ensure our vehicles deliver outstanding fuel economy.”
