Online Education Startup TRAIL Points Out Overlooked Population, Responds to Meeker’s "State of the Internet" Report with Missing Link

Online education startup, TRAIL, responds to Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers' Mary Meeker's “2012 Internet Trends Year-End Update" report, saying it overlooked a segment of the population that encompasses over 60 million Americans: those who are not online at all.

San Francisco, CA, December 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Released December 3, 2012, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers' Mary Meeker's “2012 Internet Trends Year-End Update" report is a seminal report hallmarked industry-wide for outlining emerging online trends. While the report outlined the trends for those online and the powerful growth of mobile, it overlooked a segment of the population that encompasses over 60 million Americans: those who are not online at all.

"While Meeker's report cites an 8 percent per year growth in Internet use worldwide, it does not accurately reflect the depth of this use," said TRAIL CEO, Christina Gagnier. "While some can access the Internet, they do not possess the skills to have meaningful use. In the United States, we still have 62 million people who do not know how to use the Internet. Worldwide, even using Meeker's figures, we have 5 billion people not yet using the Internet."

TRAIL is one of the companies innovating education: its builds tools that teach people how to use the Internet by using the Internet. Partnering with community institutions, TRAIL is incorporating lesson content with social gaming to teach people valuable Internet use skills. TRAIL's first platform, JobScout, teaches the essential Internet skills needed to find a job in today’s online marketplace. Its partnerships with the California State Library, the California Technology Agency, the LINK AMERICAS Foundation and the Federal Communication Commission’s “Connect to Compete” program enable TRAIL to meet people at their point of technological need.

TRAIL teaches people things that some may think are simple or trivial. But to the unprepared user, the browser lesson is the window of opportunity and a lesson in social networking is one of unknown connectivity to the broader world. In short, the ability to conduct a search and find a job is a path to sustainability for both an individual and their family.
