Olive Tree Initiative Alumni Loic Hostetter Receives California Newspaper Publishers Association Grant for Journalism Excellence

Olive Tree Initiative (OTI) alumni Loic Hostetter has been awarded $1,500 by the California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA) in the month of December for his outstanding work in journalism. Loic Hostetter is an Olive Tree Initiative core member and a third-year international development student at UCLA.

Irvine, CA, December 30, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The grant, given every year, is aimed at students who have “demonstrated an exceptional interest in pursuing careers in the newspaper business in California,” according to the California Newspaper Publishers Association website. Hostetter will apply the grant for an internship at a California newspaper in the summer of 2013.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to further my education vastly expanded after working with the Olive Tree Initiative. I really look forward to applying my knowledge and skill set toward working at a major California newspaper soon,” Hostetter said earlier this month.

The California Newspaper Publishers Association is a nonprofit trade association representing the daily and weekly newspapers of California. A 35-member Board of Directors elected by active member newspapers governs the CNPA. The CNPA has been effective protecting the interests of newspapers throughout the state of California for 124 years.

The Olive Tree Initiative is an educational program designed to promote conflict analysis and resolution through Experiential Education by providing students and community with the education, training and experiences needed to better negotiate and solve conflicts. Since 2007, OTI has expanded to six UC campuses (UC Irvine,
UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley
and UC San Diego) with strong community support groups.
OTI has chapters at Stanford, San Diego State University and
emerging chapters at universities in Washington, DC and London.

OTI has led eight trips to the Middle East, primarily in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan and one trip to Turkey and Armenia. Hostetter is the media relation’s director for the Olive Tree Initiative at UCLA.

Hostettler’s achievement highlights the growing personal accolades of Olive Tree alumni. OTI alumni have written for the Huffington Post, Al Jazeera and Foreign Policy. Over 60% of OTI alumni work professionally in international affairs and in conflict resolution after going through the OTI program.
