Chicago, IL, February 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- What makes a nonprofit great to work for? HR managers often hear about how employees need to feel connected to the mission, or be well-compensated. "Yet, while nonprofits may offer a compelling mission or good employee benefits, an Employer of Choice goes above and beyond to attract and retain great employees. Organizations of all sizes can take steps to become an Employer of Choice by focusing on four distinct areas: offering interesting work opportunities, a supportive environment, rewards & recognition, and employee development.

1. Give your employees many opportunities perform interesting and challenging work. Show them how their jobs help the organization’s mission so that they will feel inspired and feel passionate about what they do. Give them unique opportunities for visibility or significant contributions.

2. Have a supportive environment. Help your employees balance work and life by offering flexible scheduling, remote work arrangements, job sharing, and generous paid time off programs. Help them foster positive relationships with their supervisors and coworkers by creating a culture of fairness and accountability. Practice a truly “open door” policy across the board, where employees can voice their opinions without feeling attacked or ostracized.

3. Reward employees with recognition for the contribution that they have made to the organization. Offer compensation and rewards that are regularly bench-marked against the market averages. Take steps to ensure equitable treatment and transparency in your compensation and reward processes. Celebrate successes, both big and small, in publicly visible way!

4. Offer ongoing training & development opportunities. Help employees to develop skills so they can excel in their jobs on a day to basis and eventually progress up the career ladder or obtain greater influence in the organization. Provide a meaningful training and development framework, which may include an annual assessment process, benchmarks, and goal setting. Encourage employees to access training and development opportunities (both internal and external) according to their development plan. Promote employees based on their skills and past contributions, and consideration for new jobs are first given to qualified, internal candidates.
