Plan Canada Celebrates a Successful 2012

Plan celebrates the New Year by looking back on significant achievements from 2012.

Toronto, Canada, February 27, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Last year was a milestone year for Plan Canada. It celebrated its 75th anniversary and a year of significant accomplishments in 2012, as part of its mission to help break the cycle of poverty in communities across the globe.

In 2012, Plan’s work reached more that 174 million people, including 83.9 children with their work in 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas. The charitable organization successfully launched two new African community sponsorship projects in Barouéli, Mali and Volta, Ghana to help families and children in Africa. Plan also provided life-saving support to thousands of children affected by the severe drought in the Sahel region of West Africa with the help of their partners.

2012 was a big year for girls worldwide thanks to Plan’s Because I am a Girl initiative. On October 11th, the world celebrated the first International Day of the Girl, a day that would not have been possible without the support of Canadians who petitioned for a day that recognizes girls’ rights. Plan also released two reports: the 2012 Because I am a Girl State of the World’s Girls Report and A Girl’s Right to Learn Without Fear. These reports outline the importance of girls receiving at least nine years of quality education and how gender-based violence is a critical factor threatening girls’ education and what needs to be done to address this issue.

Plan Canada would like to thank all its supporters for helping to make 2012 a success, and looks forward to continued success in 2013! For full details on Plan and Because I am a Girl’s accomplishments and financials in 2012, visit plancanada.ca.
