Naperville, IL, March 10, 2013 --(PR.com
)-- Distressed homeowners facing foreclosure are now prime targets for scammers. The difficulties of navigating their options are being complicated by the threat of mortgage relief fraud.
Since the foreclosure crisis began, a growing number of people in danger of losing their homes have proven to be fertile ground for scams, which seem to offer a solution to the problem. Knowing that these homeowners are often desperate only makes these con artists bolder.
“Homeowners who are in danger of losing their home to foreclosure are especially vulnerable to these types of predators,” says Teresa Ryan, Broker/Owner, Ryan Hill Realty. “It is vitally important that these homeowners learn about the danger so they can protect themselves.”
Some of the most common scams include offering money-back guarantees, posing as a charity which helps homeowners in exchange for upfront fees, or posing as a bank representative in order to get the homeowners to stop contacting their lenders. Just last month, the New York Times reported about a ring of scammers who approached homeowners, saying they’d been pre-approved for a loan modification. The only thing they would have to do would pay a few thousand dollars up front. This is a common tactic.
As a Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE), Teresa Ryan is specially trained to help homeowners facing foreclosure while helping them avoid these types of scams. “It is important to me that homeowners know that they have options and to educate them to the dangers that exist,” Ryan said.
