However, not all vehicles test well and some problem areas are more common than others.
"Of the 17 trouble spots we look at, brakes are the biggest problem with used cars beyond normal wear and tear. Brakes are definitely something you should check carefully before you buy,” said Jon Linkov.
In the “Less than $10,000” category, the best vehicles to purchase are the 2009 Pontiac Vibe, 2008 Hyundai Sonata (four-cylinder), 2004 Acura TSX, and 2004 Toyota RAV4 (four-cylinder). In the $10,000 - $15,000 category, the top choices are the 2011 Honda Fit, 2011 Mazda3, 2006-2007 Honda Accord (V6), 2005-2006 Honda Acura TL, 2006 – 2008 Toyota RAV4 (four-cylinder), 2005 – 2007 Honda CR-V, 2004 – 2007 Toyota Highlander (V6), and 2003 – 2004 Infiniti FX.
