Evan Guthrie Law Firm Rules at Regional High School Mock Trial Competition in Charleston, SC Area

Charleston, SC, April 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina judged the South Carolina High School Mock Trial Competition for the Lowcountry Region at North Charleston City Hall in North Charleston, SC on Saturday February 23rd 2013. The competition featured teams representing high schools surrounding Charleston, SC including Berkeley High School, Edisto High School, Fort Dorchester High School, Summerville High School, and Wando High School. There were three rounds in the competition that attorney Evan Guthrie judged. Each round consisted of a full trial including an opening statement, three witnesses for the plaintiff with direct and cross, three witnesses for the defendant with direct and cross, and a closing statement. Students were scored on a number of factors including knowledge of facts and evidence and courtroom prowess, presence, and skills. Each round was scored by three scoring judges that were practicing attorneys from the local community. Each round had a presiding judge that ruled the court and evidentiary contests. Each round was scored individually and awards were given for best lawyer and witness for each round. The two teams with the best record after the three rounds moved on to the South Carolina state finals for the mock trial competition. Wando Team A and Fort Dorchester were able to move on to the state completion after advancing from the Lowcountry Region.

The case that the students were arguing revolved around an incident involving bed bugs and a news report involving a resort hotel and the fall out after a news reporter lost an opportunity for a national news position. The case was entertaining and had good and bad facts on each side with a number of evidentiary issues that could have potentially come into play. The students showed great skill in their preparation and courtroom ability. Some of the student lawyers in the competition appeared as competent and ready for real court as some of students that were in law school in similar competitions. Mr. Guthrie was impressed by a number of the student advocates and looked forward to seeing them one day as colleagues. Attorney Guthrie enjoyed his time as a scoring judge for the regional competition and looked forward to being a part of the contest in future years.
