A New App is on a Bold Mission to Get People Home Safely

With over 270,000 pedestrians dying each year on our roads, a bold new app is on a mission to get young people home safely! "Thumbln" quickly connects trusted family and friends to help people get home safe and sound.

Adelaide, Australia, May 16, 2013 --(PR.com)-- According to the World Health Organisation, more than 270,000 pedestrians die each year on the world's roads (source: AAP). As the UN tries to raise awareness for pedestrian safety with the global Road Safety Week, an innovative iPhone app has been released which makes a bold promise to get young people out at night off the streets and back home as safely and quickly as possible.

Getting stuck without a lift is frustrating, but at night it can also be dangerous, when streets become unsafe with crime and alcohol related incidents. For young people trying to get home after a night out, waiting at taxi ranks for hours can be risky but walking around looking for a taxi when they've had a drink is more dangerous. But the worst thing they can do is leave a party with a friend who's been drinking.

Thumbln aims to quickly find them safer options. With just a few clicks, young people are able to ask all at once their family and friends they trust for help to get where they need to go quickly and safely. In the background, the thumbln servers take care of communicating back and forth presenting a list of friends who have offered to help.

“We really admire the United Nations’ 10 year call to action to make roads safer,” explains Laz Davila, director of Boomtastic Apps. “They are challenging the world to save 40 million lives and it is satisfying to know that with thumbln we will be contributing to that global goal by getting young people off the streets and home safely and quickly after a night out.”

Unlike carpool apps, Thumbln has been designed from the ground up to protect users’ safety, security and privacy. It will only send out requests to trusted friends and family who have been pre-approved within the app. And unlike taxi style apps, thumbln only exchanges precise location details once both parties have agreed.

Thumbln is available as a free download in 23 languages from iTunes App Stores worldwide. An Android version will be released soon and there are plans to introduce professional transportation services later this year.
