El's Kitchen Applauds New FDA Gluten-Free Ruling

Stratford, CT, August 04, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The FDA today issues its final ruling regarding the voluntary labeling of Gluten-Free foods after much delay. El’s Kitchen is pleased to be one of the brands whose products exceed the new standard.

The new rule, which will become law in August of 2014, dictates that food products bearing any gluten-free label must contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. This is the level deemed to be safe for consumers suffering from Celiac Disease or from an intolerance to gluten. However, the line of snacks made by El’s Kitchen is actually tested to a higher degree, and all show gluten levels of less than five parts per million.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and sometimes oats, and it can interfere with the ability to absorb necessary nutrients from food. People with Celiac need to avoid gluten; but a lot of "regular" people are also choosing to avoid it.

Celiac's cause is unknown and may show up at any age. Left untreated, it can result in osteoporosis, thyroid disease, infertility and cancer. It's important to know that Celiac is a disease, not a food allergy and ought to be treated as such.

Others, who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating and gas often find relief when avoiding gluten. Even people who are depressed or moody may feel significant relief when eliminating gluten from their diet.

“We’re proud that we already have high standards in place for our customers,” says Eleanor “El” Smith, President and CEO of El’s Kitchen. “When we built our dedicated gluten-free kitchen, our aim from the start of production was for our products to meet strict levels of 5ppm, and every batch of our snacks reaches that goal.”

El’s line of gluten-free snacks includes Medleys Snack Mixes in three distinctive flavors: Cheddar, Zesty Original and Sour Cream & Onion, and their non-GMO Snaps Bagel Chips in Cinnamon & Sugar, Garlic & Herb and Simply Sea Salt varieties.
