Free Wheelchair Mission Announces Arrival of First Shipment of Wheelchairs to Paraguay

Free Wheelchair Mission’s first-ever container (550 individual units) of wheelchairs arrived in Paraguay this week.

Irvine, CA, August 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Since 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM) has provided more than 700,000 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities living in poverty in 87 countries around the globe. This week, that number rose to 88 countries as the first-ever container of FWM wheelchairs bound for Paraguay arrived in the South American republic. Free Wheelchair Mission performs extensive service throughout Latin America with nearly 30% of their wheelchairs being sent there in the last year.

Although Paraguay has one of the strongest economies in Latin America, a large disparity remains between the income levels of its citizens: more than one third of the population lives below the poverty line. While steps are being taken to help bolster social welfare programs, there is still a large population of people living with physical disabilities but unable to obtain a mobility aid. By partnering with a local organization to distribute the wheelchairs, Free Wheelchair Mission hopes to support the efforts being made to serve the Paraguayan population still in need.

Free Wheelchair Mission’s Executive Director Reed Hartley said, “It is always a great day for us when we get to welcome another country to our family. We know there’s a need for mobility aids in Paraguay and we’re grateful to have this opportunity to help provide them.

“I hope this is the beginning of a long partnership for FWM with the Paraguayan people.”
