Long Island, NY, September 08, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Maurer Foundation is proud to announce our participation in the upcoming all-girls lacrosse tournament and fundraiser, LAX for M.e. & the GALS. The tournament will take place on Sunday, October 27th at Smithtown High School East in St. James, NY. Proceeds will benefit both the Maurer Foundation's breast health education and the Girls Athletic League of Smithtown (GALS).

This Long Island fundraiser is a wonderful example of what the Maurer Foundation is all about—promoting the active lifestyle choices a young woman can make today to improve her likelihood of a healthy, cancer-free future. GALS, a volunteer-run athletic league, shares the foundation's commitment to encouraging active and healthy lifestyles.

Teams of girls ranging in age from grades 4-12 will participate in the tournament, providing a full day of athletic competition for families, friends, and the public to enjoy. Tournament fees are $750 per team, with a $200 deposit due by September 16th. Smithtown High School East is located at 10 School Street in St. James. On the day of the tournament, registration begins at 7 am with tournament play running from 8 am to 4 pm.

The proceeds from the tournament that benefit The Maurer Foundation will help support our breast health education programs, which are presented in high schools, colleges, and community groups across Long Island and the surrounding areas. These programs educate attendees on the positive, proactive choices they can make to reduce their risk of breast cancer in the future, from practicing proper nutrition to performing breast self-exams and other early detection techniques. Participation in sports such as lacrosse is a prime example of these kinds of cancer-fighting choices: research has shown that a woman's breast cancer risk can be reduced by regular exercise.

The Maurer Foundation is honored to be a part of this year's tournament, and looks forward to watching these talented young athletes compete for the championship.
