The Daily Planet Café Announces September 2013 Science Café Events

Rocky Top Hospitality’s Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Hosts Weekly Science Talks in Conjunction with North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Raleigh, NC, September 19, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dean Ogan, owner of Rocky Top Hospitality, has announced that The Daily Planet Café will host three science café events in September in conjunction with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The science café events are scheduled to take place each Thursday in September as part of the museum’s science programming. Featuring such diverse topics as animal explorations, medical science improvements and the safety of our drinking water, this month’s events are sure to engage and captivate audiences. For more information on each event, visit http://naturalsciences.org/sciencethursdays.

“Biopharmaceuticals: Not Your Parents’ Medicine” will explore one of the innovative approaches to medications – biopharmaceuticals. Biopharmaceuticals are created with materials from the animal, plant and bacteria kingdoms, often through a complex production process. The discussion, led by Dr. Gary Gilleskie, will uncover how these drugs are made and why they are important to our local economy. This event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit http://naturalsciences.org/programs-events/science-cafe-biopharmaceuticals-not-your-parents-medicine.

“The Secret Lives of Scorpions” will take a look at one of the world’s most unique creatures, with species found everywhere from the highest mountain ranges to caverns 600 meters below sea level. Though fascinating with their fluorescent transformation under ultraviolet light, complex courtship rituals and potential to cure forms of cancer, much remains unknown about the biological make up the scorpion species. Biologist Lauran Esposito will discuss the scorpion world, the discoveries that have previously been made and some of the mysteries that remain to be explored. This event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit, http://naturalsciences.org/programs-events/secret-lives-scorpions.

“What’s in My Water?” will discuss the basics of our water system – specifically where our drinking water comes from and what types of chemicals and other contaminants might be lurking there. In a discussion led by Heather Patisaul, associate professor of biology at NC State University, guests will learn whether bottled water is safer than tap water, what types of contaminants are found in water, and what measures can be taken now to ensure the world’s water supply is protected. This event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit http://naturalsciences.org/programs-events/science-cafe-whats-my-water.

“Our monthly science café events are a great way to bring the local community together for a fun evening of entertainment through the continuously evolving field of science,” said Ogan. “We look forward to each of our September discussions and encourage attendees to come and share their own experiences and questions about the world of science.”
