Thieme’s Special Issue of Seminars in Liver Disease Takes an International Perspective on Liver Surgery

New York, NY, October 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The latest issue of "Seminars in Liver Disease," published by Thieme is a remarkable collection of articles that demonstrate the scope of contemporary liver surgery. The issue is introduced by guest editors Jean C. Emond and Michael D. Kluger from Columbia University and The New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Emond and Kluger point out that great contributions have been made worldwide to the progression of liver surgery, however, the ‘current explosion of innovation’ emanates from the Far East. "This trend is perpetuated by the high prevalence of hepatitis B in Asia and also by the advanced technologies implemented by leading medical centers across Asia. In fact, Korea is home to the largest liver transplant center in the world and China’s leading medical centers practice an extremely high level of liver surgery," explains Jean C. Emond.

Michael D. Kluger adds, "Despite the existence of highly advanced liver centers in the United States, there is opportunity to enhance expertise in liver surgery through training paradigms across the different surgical specialties treating liver disease. Advances in both imaging technology and interpretation need to disseminate more widely. The proliferation of liver-focused specialists in anesthesia, interventional radiology, and interventional gastroenterology is a further element that will broadly advance the quality and outcomes of care."

The articles published in this issue of "Seminars in Liver Disease" cover a breadth of topics; ranging from the application of hepatic resections in China, safe evaluation of the liver surgery candidate and perioperative care practices, management of liver lesions through image-guided interventions as supportive and definitive therapies and the growing role of minimal access techniques for complex liver surgery, to the management of benign liver tumors, cholangiocarcinoma, hepatic metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma.

"The articles featured in this issue of 'Seminars in Liver Disease' are very special, and will be of particular interest to surgeons. However, it is also important that hepatologists and other non-surgeons who participate in the care of patients with advanced liver disease be aware of, and exploit, the surgical advances now available to their patients. This issue provides a great overview of the surgical procedures available in the 21st century to treat liver disease," comments Paul D. Berk, MD, Editor-in-Chief of "Seminars in Liver Disease" (Thieme Publishers, New York/Stuttgart).

"Seminars in Liver Disease" is a quarterly review journal that publishes topic specific issues related to the specialties of hepatology and gastroenterology. It is the premiere review journal in the field.
