Bethlehem Church Presents a Benefit Concert to Aid Typhoon Relief Efforts in Philippines Featuring Ann Arbor Area Musicians

Ann Arbor, MI, November 27, 2013 --(PR.com)-- A performance of Maurice Durufle’s Requiem will take place on Sunday, December 1st at 8 p.m. The performance is for the benefit of the victims Typhoon Haiyan that devastated the Philippines November 8. Proceeds will go to the multi-denominational Church World Service, one of the highest rated relief organizations in the U.S. in terms of management and percentage of dollars going directly to relief.

The event will take place in the sanctuary at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in downtown Ann Arbor, and will be led by Bethlehem Church Interim Choir Director, Arianne Abela as well as Organist Gail Jennings and approxiatemly 100 musicians will volunteer their talents to this benefit.

Bob Barnhart, Senior Field Director for the Midwest Area, will be available at the reception following the performance to answer questions and to mingle with guests.

"CWS is providing direct material assistance to typhoon victims through our trusted partners in the Philippines. CWS is providing technical assistance through experienced CWS personnel with participation in the Asia Disaster Risk Reduction Network," said Barnhart.

"Church World Service works with 37 Christian denominations and communions in the United States and partners with local organizations to offer effective and urgent international aid, without trying to convert anyone As part of the annual CROP Walk here in Washtenaw county, area faith organizations have been raising money for CWS for over 30 years." Charity Navigator reports that over 85% of the money CWS raises goes into their programming.

As the Philippines faced a long, grim path to recovery in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, Arianne Abela, a native of the Philippines, is compassionately organizing a benefit concert for Philippines Typhoon relief, with proceeds going to Church World Service. The donation goal has been increased to $750,000.

In the aftermath of World War II, Church World Service was established. Several denominations came together to form an agency to do ‘feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.’ Nearly 70 years later and CWS is still accomplishing its original mission.

According to the Philippine government’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 3,982 deaths have been confirmed. At least 1,602 people are still missing at the time of this release.
