Walmart Foundation Funds Hot Meals for Homebound Seniors in Our Community

The Walmart Foundation and the Delaware State Giving Advisory Council have awarded Meals On Wheels Delaware a $30,000 grant to fund meal delivery programs throughout the state for the growing elderly population.

Wilmington, DE, December 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Walmart Foundation has awarded Meals On Wheels Delaware a $30,000 grant to ensure homebound seniors throughout the state of Delaware receive a hot, nutritious meal daily. This grant will fund more than 4,000 much appreciated meals for the seniors in our state who otherwise would not have the means to provide meals for themselves. Last year, caring volunteers delivered more than 630,000 meals to nearly 4,000 homebound seniors throughout Delaware.

The Walmart State Advisory Councils, made up of Walmart associates representing each state determine the needs within each state, review all eligible grant applications and make funding recommendations to the Walmart Foundation. As of 2012, 1 in 11 Delaware seniors are threatened by hunger, with 23% of Delaware’s elderly population living alone. This grant will help ensure homebound seniors are not put on a waiting list; rather they are able to rely on consistent meal deliveries and the comforts our dedicated volunteers provide each day

“We are continually impressed by the business leaders and individual volunteers who come together to ensure Delaware’s growing homebound elderly community can rely on daily meal deliveries to keep them healthy and independent. Our success greatly depends on the commitment of the local community,” said Mari Considine, Executive Director. “Meals On Wheels Delaware and the seniors we serve are extremely grateful for the funds Walmart has given to support our mission.”

“The Walmart Foundation is thrilled to be able to provide this grant to help homebound seniors in Delaware,” said Philip Serghini, Director of Public Affairs for Walmart. “This grant represents Walmart’s commitment to helping address issues related to hunger in the United States,” he added.

For most of the people who receive meals, the service is a vital lifeline which is key to maintaining their health and independence. Since its inception, Meals On Wheels Delaware has raised funds in the community through direct appeals, targeted outreach and successful events. As a result of our efforts Delaware remains one of the few states in the country without a waiting list for Meals On Wheels.
