Operation: Coming Home Breaks Ground on Seventh Hero Home

Volunteer Project Begins Work on Home for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Oliver “Ollie” Hughes in Fuquay-Varina.

Raleigh, NC, December 19, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Operation: Coming Home, a joint volunteer project by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County (HBA), the U.S. Veterans Corps and various area nonprofits and businesses, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the organization’s seventh Hero Home on Dec. 17 in Fuquay-Varina. The recipient selected for the custom-built home from M/I Homes is U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Oliver “Ollie” Hughes, who will reside there with his family upon the home’s completion, scheduled for April 2014. Also in attendance at the ceremony were Mayor John W. Byrne of Fuquay-Varina, Caroline Sullivan, District 4 representative for the Wake County Board of Commissioners, the USO of North Carolina and members of the U.S. Veterans Corps.

Staff Sgt. Hughes was deployed to Afghanistan in January 2011. His vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) on April 13, 2011, just weeks before he was to return home, and lost his left leg as a result. Staff Sgt. Hughes was later transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he spent a month as an inpatient before moving to Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he spent the majority of his recovery. He was released in June 2011 and has spent the last two years going through grueling physical therapies and multiple surgeries. He now wears a special brace on his right leg that absorbs much of the impact of his leg hitting the ground, reducing the pain so that walking and even running are tolerable.
