The 4th International Workshop on Lunar Science and Technology

The 4th International Workshop on Lunar and Planetary Compact and Cryogenic Science and Technology Applications (LSA 4) will be held April 8-11, 2014 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The event is designed to be a crossroads for scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs focused on current Lunar missions.

New York, NY, January 23, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Flexure Engineering, sponsor of LSA 4 as part of a series of workshops furthering Lunar and space exploration, announced the scheduling of LSA 4 (www.lsaworkshops.com.) Russell Cox, event organizer at Flexure Engineering, described the event as a response to the recent increased interest in exploring the Moon and Lunar missions.

“After 30 years of neglect, the Moon is becoming a very active and crowded place, “Cox explained. He noted that Russia, China and the United States currently have plans for active missions on the Lunar surface within 3 to 5 years. This level of activity supports many secondary payloads and missions to the Moon as well as throughout the space close to Earth. These new missions will involve smaller national and private programs such as the Google Lunar X Prize teams and other entrepreneurs.

The Lunar Workshops series as a whole are designed to foster collaborative work among scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to solve the challenges of building hardware, software, businesses and collaborative communities involved in going back to the Moon and beyond.

As a part of the series, LSA 4 will bring together world-class researchers and experts to deliver progress updates on the latest discoveries and opportunities in Lunar Science. The program will include technical presentations on lander and rover technology and cryogenic planetary science and processes. Expert presenters will discuss the latest results from the LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), the LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) and the LADEE (Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer) programs as well as the Luna and Resource Prospector missions. Astrobotic Technology, Inc. and MoonExpress Inc. will provide updates on the progress of their missions. The list of topics planned demonstrates the high level of expertise at the conference:

• Results from cold temperature science investigations
• Plans for polar cold trap craters, skylights, and peaks investigations
• Cryogenic Technologies
• High Temperature Superconductor Applications
• Upcoming Lunar missions

In addition to the technical programs, LSA 4 will be the site of the inaugural Success Camp for Astropreneurs which will encompass a full day of workshops. The interactive program will focus on expanding participants’ practical knowledge of leadership, marketing for scientists and engineers, legal finances and other matters critical to business success.

LSA 4 is the anchor event for a week of activities in and around the Kennedy Space Center including the 43rd Space Congress sponsored by Canaveral Council of Technical Societies (CCTS), Yuri's Night, tours of local space facilities, and a banquet co-sponsored by the Missile, Space and Range Pioneers, a member of CCTS. For those unable to attend or present at the event in person, live streaming coverage will be available.

Cox described the genesis of the Lunar workshop series, “We created the LSA workshop series to foster collaboration and scientific research that combines the many varied disciplines that we’ll need to explore the Moon, see what resources are there and decide how to use them.” Based on the interest and growth in such a short time, it’s clear they are meeting a need. “We’re looking forward to working with the brightest and most talented scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs at LSA 4 – see you there!”
