Cardiologist Advocating Plant-Based Diet to Speak at U.S. Veg Corp's NYC Vegetarian Food Festival

New York, NY, February 16, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Top cardiologist Dr. Robert Ostfeld will present a talk on the connection between veganism and healthy hearts at the 4th annual New York City Vegetarian Food Festival on Saturday, March 1, in Chelsea.

Ostfeld is the founder and director of the Cardiac Wellness Program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City and an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He earned his MD from Yale University and his MS in epidemiology from Harvard University.

His professional interests include cardiovascular disease prevention, medical education, and clinical research. He earned the Outstanding Full Time Attending of the Year award at Montefiore for excellence in teaching medical residents; the Program Director's Award for dedicated service on behalf of the Montefiore-Einstein Cardiology Fellowship; and was elected to the Leo M. Davidoff Society at Einstein for outstanding achievement in the teaching of medical students.

When he speaks to general audiences about heart health, Ostfeld often compares humans to cars. “When we are born our bodies are turbo engines,” he said. “A bunch of animal products and processed foods later, we turn our bodies into clunkers.” At the Festival, he said, he will “discuss how a whole-foods plant-based diet can both prevent and reverse disease and can keep your body looking, feeling and functioning at its best.”

His talk on Saturday, March 1, 12:30-1:45 pm, will be entitled “Crushing Heart Disease—A Healthy Sexy Heart.”

Other presenters at the Festival will include cardiologist Dr. Joel Kahn, author Steve “Sproutman” Meyerwitz, nutritionist Ashley Koff, and Vegan Radiance blogger Lauren Walls. Approximately 100 vendors will be showing and sampling their wares, including Vega, Just the Food, Beyond Sushi, and Rescue Chocolate. There will also be musical entertainment, children’s activities, and a raffle benefiting the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food.

The NYC Vegetarian Food Festival will take place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street, between 6thand 7th Avenues). Tickets can be purchased in advance at https://2014nycvegfoodfest.chirrpy.com/ or at the door. For further information, visit http://nycvegfoodfest.com/.
