The Shannell Group will first be marketing access to The National Hospice Referral Network, a switched-based telephone service offering a national hospice provider membership directory. “We are witnessing an increase in the number of citizens interested in agencies with Hospice expertise," says Chimera. “In our market research, we are recognizing the importance of improving access nationally and reaching out to healthcare providers to earn earlier referrals so hospice care providers can offer patients a better quality of life in their final days.” There is an inaccurate perception that electing hospice means you are giving up, but actually new research finds patients actually live longer within hospice care.

The Shannell Group will be responsible for a comprehensive mix of strategy, creative effort, and market sales production. Shannell will also oversee the development of other strategic alliances and products to offer savings for hospice operations and promote earlier access for patients with life limiting illnesses.

One of the biggest obstacles to getting early referrals in the hospice market is the ever growing number of hospices which service the varying geographic areas. According to the 2005 National Summary of Hospice Care, there are now 4,100 hospice service providers throughout the United States. Also, approximately one-third of all deaths in the United States were under the care of a hospice program. Over 1.2 million patients received services from hospice in 2005.

The increasing number of service providers has created a growing list of possible service providers that every hospital discharge planner and physician's office must go through to find the correct local hospice for their patient. Many referring parties have now become very frustrated with the time and effort required just to find the correct contact information for the best hospice for their patients.

“The National Hospice Referral Network, provides a practical means to make the referring parties’ job much easier,” said Chimera.

“We will continue adding hospice service providers to the membership directory. The network is now operational nationwide, but the market roll out has started in the mid-Atlantic and southern regions. As Shannell adds hospice providers to the directory, it will offer nationwide coverage by the end off the year,” Chimera added.
