St. Mary’s Medical Center Upgrades Surgical System with SIS

Atlanta, GA, October 12, 2007 --(PR.com)-- SIS (Surgical Information Systems) announced an agreement this week for a major upgrade to the perioperative system at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. This upgrade will expand the existing SIS OR scheduling system at SMMC to a broader SIS Perioperative Information Management System, automating the transfer of data to other hospital systems.

Todd Campbell, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at SMMC, said that hospital management chose to upgrade the system to enable the operating room to gain better control over materials used in the perioperative area and to start collecting accurate, detailed data on case costs. The hospital’s new SIS modules will include Nursing Intra-op Documentation, Rules Based Charging, Charging and Materials, and SIS Analytics and will improve the electronic interface of data to other systems within the facility.

“SIS systems have been a tremendous help to St. Mary’s Medical Center during our long business partnership with the company,” Campbell said. “St. Mary’s has always been a leader in local health care, and this upgrade will take us to the next level. I believe this will help St. Mary’s improve patient care and control costs at the same time. I know we’ll look back on this decision to upgrade as another great step forward in the history of St. Mary’s Medical Center.”

Integration capabilities played a key role in SMMC’s decision to upgrade their existing product, highlighting SIS’ extensive experience and broad expertise in providing industry-standard interfaces between systems. SIS currently has 700-plus active system interfaces deployed that it has developed and continues to maintain.

SIS CEO Ed Daihl said that St. Mary’s Medical Center was one of SIS’ earliest clients, having signed the initial agreement in 1999. “We are pleased that a longstanding SIS customer has agreed to expand their system with modules that will help them control costs and increase revenue,” said Daihl. “Their upgraded system will deliver tangible benefits, enabling them to meet patient safety initiatives using SIS nursing documentation. Management at SMMC will be working with SIS to reduce paper usage and will be storing patient OR records in an electronic medical record.”

Another important function of the comprehensive SIS solution is its capacity to show significant revenue and cash flow improvements by allowing the surgery department to establish rules that match their case information with specific payer rules, delivering appropriate information to the hospital’s billing system. Through SIS Analytics they will be able to combine business and medical data to develop best financial and clinical practices within their institution.
