Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank Donates $3,480 to Local Schools to Support Supplemental Meal Programs

Bank committed to providing support through Famers’ Market promotion.

Newburyport, MA, May 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Newburyport Five Cents Saving Bank has announced it has raised $3,480 for meal-programs at area schools as part of a season-long fundraising initiative which took place at the Newburyport Winter Farmers’ Market. The Winter Farmers’ Market was held every other Sunday from December 8, 2013 through April 6, 2014. As part of its commitment to help feed local school children in need, the Bank sold organic cotton canvas bags for a $10 donation, which was matched by a $15 gift from the Bank. The consumer then had $25 worth of “school food tickets” to donate to the participating school(s) of their choice. For each subsequent use of the bag at the market, the Bank donated an additional two tickets to the school of the consumer’s choice. A total of 1,392 school food tickets were earmarked.

The local schools benefiting include: Amesbury Elementary, Amesbury High School, Amesbury Middle School, Bresnahan School, Brown School, Cashman Elementary, Newbury Elementary, Newburyport High School, Nock Middle School, Pentucket Elementary School, Pinegrove Elementary School, Salisbury Elementary, and Triton Elementary School.

“We saw a way to help students in the towns we serve. We want to help make sure that our children get the nutritious food they need, even if their family doesn’t qualify for the free or reduced food meal programs, and this was a way to enlist the support of our neighbors in a great cause. The children are our future and no one in school should suffer from hunger while trying to learn,” said Janice C. Morse, President and CEO, Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank.

The success of the program has led the Bank to continue its efforts through the Newburyport Summer Farmers’ Market, which will be held every Sunday starting in May. Morse continued, “It is heartwarming to see the generosity of the community and their wiliness to help children in need.”
