“Getting a workout in can be difficult when life is busy. With schedules filled up to cover nearly every waking moment, it is important to find ways to exercise and get fit when there just isn’t any extra time,” said Eric Zaharko president of Garden Spas and Pools.

“National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is there to help the public realize the need for living healthier and getting enough exercise in every day,” continued Zaharko. Here are three ways to exercise more efficiently:

Desk-ercise – One of the biggest problems for today’s society is the sedentary nature of most of the workforce. Instead of constantly moving to find food, digging to access water or food, or chasing down prey, we sit at a desk to earn the money to buy what we need. It’s a great thing in many ways, but it is horrible for our physical health. There are ways to make even sitting at a desk an activity, however, and making it a part of everyday will help people with desk jobs lose weight, feel better, and live healthier.

Before beginning desk/chair exercises, make sure the chair is the proper height. When sitting in a chair, feet should be flat on the floor and hips bent at 90 degrees.

Leg lifts, knee raises, and even arm presses are just a few of the many exercises that can be modified to accommodate desk workers. Make a plan to do a set of exercises every hour, or during break periods every day. The minutes and hours add up through the week to help “deskercisers” get the amount of 2 to 3 hours of activity suggested by the President’s Fitness Council.

Walk Whenever Possible – Sometimes it is difficult to convince ourselves to take a walk just for the sake of walking, but there are likely many times we get in the car and drive even a block or two every day. Instead of taking the car to the store, walk or ride a bike. If it is absolutely necessary to drive to a store, park as far away from the doors as possible. Better still, park a few blocks away and walk the final couple of blocks. Don’t forget to take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. Every extra step helps us get a little bit closer to better health.

Exercise While Relaxing – Install a hot tub and find out how easy it is to get a workout in while relieving stress and relaxing at the end of a long day. Researcher Phillip L. Hooper, M.D. from the McKee Medical Center in Colorado found that sitting in a hot tub helped people lose weight, and also lowered blood sugar.

Hot tubs provide even greater benefits for people with cardiovascular disease or other issues that prevent them from working out under normal circumstances. Dr. Bruce E. Becker, M.D. studied the effects of sitting in the warm water of a hot tub and found that it benefited cardiovascular health, and provided the heart with a workout. Doing light aerobic movements in the water increases the efficiency of those exercises as well, and can be done even when people have arthritis or other joint problems.
