Democracy.com Announces Acquisition of Civic Engagement Startup Voter’s Friend

New York, NY, July 02, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Democracy.com today announced the acquisition of Voter’s Friend, a civic engagement website and mobile app enabling voters to enter their zip code or address and quickly learn about the candidates and referendums on their ballot.

Launched in December 2010 by founders Daniel McLean and Dylan Beynon, Voter’s Friend has been used by over 50,000 voters in Ohio, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York. Voter’s Friend allows users to look up their ballot by zip code or address and see it in its entirety down to the local level. Voters can see issue positions, big ideas, biographies and other details about candidates on their ballot. Voter’s Friend won the 2013 ChallengePost Apps For Working Government Award, sponsored by the Sunlight Foundation, Personal Democracy Media, The Monkey Cage and No Labels.

"Democracy.com is committed to connecting all participants in our democracy - incumbents, candidates, appointees, organizations and voters - through the first true social network for politics," said Talmage Cooley, CEO of Democracy.com. "The acquisition of Voter’s Friend fits perfectly with our goal of providing the most comprehensive location-specific searchable database of our democracy, and supports Democracy.com’s mission to revolutionize civic engagement through quick and easy actions that make a huge difference in elections.”

"This acquisition by Democracy.com enables us to greatly amplify the impact of our civic search technology. We couldn’t be more delighted to be joining forces with Democracy.com, a truly visionary platform,” said Voter’s Friend Founder and CEO Daniel McLean.

Voter’s Friend founder and CEO Daniel McLean will join the Democracy.com team as Senior Software Architect. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
