Austin FIT Encourages All to Get FIT, Get Active This Fall by Training for a Marathon

Austin, TX, August 07, 2014 --( Austin FIT invites runners and walkers of all skill levels and goals to register online for their fall marathon and half marathon training program now through August 31st at The 26-week program, which begins August 23rd, will train members to run or walk in the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon, the 3M Half Marathon, the USA FIT Half & Full Marathon or the Austin Freescale Marathon and Half Marathon. Orientation and on-site registration will take place on Saturday, August 16th, at the following locations and times:

- Running program: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Luke’s Locker, 115 Sandra Muraida Way
- Walking program: 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Freddie’s Place, 1703 S. 1st St.

“What I love most about Austin Fit is that it is a fun training group for everyone,” says Austin FIT organizer and long-time running coach Jennifer Harney. “We welcome all paces, backgrounds, ages and abilities to join us this fall!”

Each Saturday morning, members meet for ability-based runs and walks followed by informational seminars. In between Saturday sessions, they follow a carefully devised training schedule, enjoy weekly social events and receive additional encouragement and expertise from their coaches. The goal is for participants to gently build up their base mileage each week, an approach that helps new and returning members work their way to long distances with minimal risk of injury. Although many members register for upcoming target races, most simply enjoy the social atmosphere that naturally accompanies the program.

In addition to their comprehensive running program, Austin FIT also offers the only half marathon and marathon walking program in the city. Started in 1997 by head walking coach Elayne Barber, the program trains beginning walkers using an interval routine that can be modified for any of six different pace groups. It even offers a section called “Walking It Up” that effectively transitions walkers who would like to eventually run in a half marathon or marathon.

“Getting off the sofa or out of bed is the hardest thing about training. If you can get out of bed, the rest is easy,” advises Barber. “In our program, the people make the difference. Running or walking with others brings our members the support they need to achieve anything.”
