Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo Law Firm has partnered with Kids’ Chance of New Jersey hoping to make a difference in the life of a young adult whose parent has been fatally or seriously injured in a NJ workplace accident. As a proud “Doctorate Degree” Sponsor of the organization’s Leadership of Excellence Program, a new Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo and Kids’ Chance of NJ Scholarship has been created, awarding a deserving student $10,000 annually toward college for four consecutive years.
Northfield, NJ, August 15, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The law firm of Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo (PCPM) has partnered with Kids’ Chance of New Jersey as a proud “Doctorate Degree” Sponsor of the organization’s Leadership of Excellence Program, hoping to make a difference in the life of a young adult whose parent has been fatally or seriously injured in a New Jersey workplace accident.
The sponsorship includes a new Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo and Kids’ Chance of NJ Scholarship, which is being offered for four consecutive years. The Kids’ Chance organization has matched the funds donated by Petro Cohen to create a $10,000 annual award for a child attending a four-year college.
Frank Petro, Esq., a founding partner at Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo, often faces harrowing family hardship cases as head of the firm’s Workers’ Compensation Department. “It is heart wrenching to hear stories from families after a work-related death or serious disability of a parent. In addition to the inevitable emotional burden, many families suffer tremendous financial challenges.” Last year, Petro Cohen became a sponsor for the newly founded NJ Chapter of Kids’ Chance in hopes of being able to help those who suffer such great losses. Petro added, “With the new scholarship, it is our hope to provide some financial relief enabling deserving young people to pursue their educational dreams.”
At a recent fundraising dinner, Petro Cohen partner Stephen Matarazzo presented a check for $10,000 to the first scholarship recipient, Scott Kwiatek. Just a few months after he was born, Scott lost his father to a workers’ compensation accident. In spite of the hardship and with the support of family, friends, and loved ones, Scott went on to excel, maintaining high honors in academics while participating in basketball, soccer, baseball, and track, and giving back to the community by serving on his hometown’s First Aid Squad. Scott is starting college at New Jersey Institute of Technology this fall, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Civil Engineering.
As the 2014 winner of the Petro Cohen Petro Matarazzo and Kids’ Chance New Jersey Scholarship, Kwiatek has the opportunity to continue the sponsorship for all four years of undergraduate school, providing he stays in good standing and continues with school as a full time student.
To be eligible for the scholarship grant, applicants must have a parent who has been fatally or catastrophically injured in a work-related accident, meeting the criteria of the New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Act and resulting in financial need. All applications will be reviewed by an independent Kids’ Chance of NJ committee and announced by the organization’s Scholarship Committee.
Kids’ Chance of New Jersey was formed and held its first fundraiser in 2013, granting the first $10,000 scholarship to a West Morris/Mendham High School student whose father suffered a spinal cord injury. At this year’s gala, the organization presented $10,000 scholarships to five other students, in addition to Kwiatek, whose parents were either killed or seriously injured in New Jersey workplace accidents.
