Fidelity Bank Delivers Financial Education to Crosswinds Youth

New Program Makes Financial Education Fun

Merritt Island, FL, October 28, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Fidelity Bank of Florida, N.A. is working with Crosswinds Youth Services to provide teens with a comprehensive financial education program that focuses on making learning fun.

Each week, members of the Fidelity Bank staff visit Crosswinds to teach financial literacy. The program is based on a the ten week curriculum offered in the FDIC Money Smart modules and enhanced with hands-on, real life examples and games to make learning more engaging. Concepts include preparing a budget, developing personal savings strategies, managing a checking account, building and maintaining a good credit rating, shopping for a loan, and the benefits of a positive banking relationship.

Financial literacy and the consequences of debt have become hot topics over the past few years. Student loan maker Nellie Mae reported that the average teenage student bears a credit card balance of $3,200 and one in every ten college students carries a balance of over $7,800. Further, the American Bankruptcy Institute reports that one in five bankruptcy filings last year were from young people under the age of 25 who started their lives in financial failure.

“Studies have found that American teenagers are expressing a strong interest in learning about personal finance, but most traditional programs are boring to them. We’ve come up with ways to spice up the delivery method of otherwise bland information. The future of these kids depends on their ability to manage their income and this is their opportunity to learn the tools they need to do a good job,” said Keila Rooney, director of marketing for Fidelity Bank. The bank plans to make this an ongoing event with Crosswinds.
