Student Discusses Fertility Preservation Options for Cancer Patients at Whitworth University

St. Paul, MN, November 20, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Whitworth University in Spokane, WA was the setting for a student presentation designed to educate and inform fellow students of the importance of fertility preservation for cancer patients.

Kayla Batastini, daughter of ReproTech Site Director, Danika Batastini, and nursing student of Whitworth University received top marks when she addressed fellow students to complete an assignment. In her presentation she addressed the importance of fertility preservation, the options cancer patients have for preserving fertility, as well as the fertility preservation process.

“I chose to do my speech on fertility preservation for cancer patients because, unfortunately, cancer is a disease that affects many people and for college students my age, it is important to know that you still have the option to have a family one day after treatment is complete,” says Ms. Batastini.

According to the American Cancer Society, 140,000 American men and women under the age of 45 are newly diagnosed with cancer each year. Also, according to the American Association for Cancer Research, while the United States had an estimated 3 million survivors in 1971, that estimate is expected to reach about 14.5 million in 2014, with nearly 380,000 having been diagnosed as children or adolescents. Once diagnosed, there is a small window of time for patients to preserve their fertility; therefore, access to cryopreservation services is extremely important. ReproTech, Ltd. has organized its Fertility Preservation Network to educate oncology professionals and caretakers, as well as provide much needed cryopreservation services. The network now includes members in 36 states and the Caribbean. Additionally, the work of organizations such as LIVESTRONG has advanced the awareness of the need for Fertility Preservation among the oncology community.
