Bigger is Better When It Comes to Tile – PetraSlate Tile & Stone Addresses the New Trend of Using Large Floor Tiles

Denver, CO, December 11, 2014 --(PR.com)-- In the past, designers and builders relied more on color and type of material when choosing tile for a project because large format tile planks – anything over 24” – for flooring or walls just wasn’t readily available. In the last couple of years, however, there has been a growing trend among designers with an interest in the larger size of tile being equally important and this has spurred manufacturers to respond with an ever growing catalogue of new offerings.

Most homeowners don’t realize it, but larger tiles tend to make a small room appear larger. This new trend is great news for the supplier, the homeowner, the designer, the contractor, and everyone in between because the larger format tiles have fewer grout lines to clean and maintain. The larger format gives the homeowner a great aesthetic with less maintenance.

Although large tiles on their own can make a room look bigger, designers and contractors can intensify this illusion in the way that they place their tiles. One way to do this is to lay down tiles in a diagonal 45 degree pattern; this way the widest part of the tile faces the entrance of the room and creates the illusion of a more expansive space. Another way designers and contractors can place their tiles is by using the running bond pattern with rectangular tiles so that the widest part of these tiles are perpendicular to the entrance of the room; this will essentially create the same effect as the diagonal pattern.

“We see an ever growing interest in large format tiles over the past year, especially as floor tiles in Denver’s market,” said Kristi Hada, PetraSlate CEO. “Is this a trend? Of course, but we don’t see it as a fad because the large tile format is such a great look and so versatile for everything from shower walls to focus walls in dining or family rooms. We think this trend in large format tiles is still in its infancy and we will see ever increasing demand that manufacturers will surely mobilize to meet.”
