European Space Agency’s 50 Years in Space

Brüel & Kjær helps ESA’s pioneering comet landing.

Royston, United Kingdom, December 18, 2014 --(PR.com)-- As the European Space Agency (ESA) celebrates its 50th anniversary with a number of events, Brüel & Kjær reflects on its many successful joint ventures with the renowned organisation.

During this time, Brüel & Kjær’s LDS products have had a long and successful association with the space industry through ESA and ESTEC, which includes assisting the Rosetta Comet chasing satellite complete its journey and check its safe arrival.

Before leaving Earth a decade ago, to journey 800 million km from the Sun, Rosetta underwent a complete test campaign at ESA’s Technical Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands - the largest spacecraft testing facility in Europe. This included a full suite of environmental and mechanical testing, including Brüel & Kjær’s LDS dual V984 shaker system, used to simulate transportation and launch stress, prior to final satellite acceptance. Brüel & Kjær’s 4506 sensors were also used in the feet of the Philae Lander to record touchdown on the comet.

Following on from this success, ESTEC then asked Brüel & Kjær to supply a quad V984LS for testing high value, high mass satellite payload systems up to 10 tonnes. It proved to be a vital component, that ensured ESA and ESTEC maintained their position at the forefront of the space industry.

Brüel & Kjær’s expertise and domain knowledge continues to give these industry leaders the confidence to come back to us, in order to achieve the necessary outcomes and remain leaders in their fields.

Our range of vibration test solutions, including the LDS shakers, cover applications as diverse as satellite testing and structural analysis through to squeak and rattle checks and package testing.
