Nomad Takes the Drag Out of Charging with Materials from Bayer MaterialScience

Pittsburgh, PA, January 08, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Even in our connected world, a conventional cable is not always handy to charge a drained mobile phone or tablet. So the founders of Nomad set out to design a cable as mobile as their lives.

Knowing when an electronic device will need a charge can be unpredictable, but Nomad needed a predictably high-performing and impact-resistant plastic to protect its charging products.

“We chose Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate for its predictable, consistent quality from batch to batch and high-impact resistance,” said Nomad founders Noah Dentzel and Brian Hahn. “We use the highest grade materials to ensure we have built a product that can handle virtually anything but that is still flexible enough to work in hard-to-reach places.”

Developed for people who want a mobile charger without dragging around a 3-foot cable, Nomad charging products make clever use of ubiquitous USB ports commonly found on computers, most modern TVs, printers, keyboards, TV-boxes, stereos, game consoles, cash registers, cars, and airplanes.

True to their nomad spirit, Dentzel and Hahn built the first product while living between a basement, garage, boat and the open road. Now headquartered in San Francisco, Nomad’s product line includes:

NomadClip, a carabiner-sized USB charger that is durable and mobile;
NomadKey a key-sized USB cable charger;
NomadPlus, an innovative 2-in-1 charging solution that features an 1800mAh battery add-on for a USB wall plug that packs enough power to fully charge a phone after it is unplugged from the wall.

“Working closely with Nomad’s engineering and design team we provided guidance on material selection and testing. This helped Nomad develop a tough protective outer shell for charging products that meet a market need for mobile charging,” said Jeffrey Kozody, field market development, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate is a high-flow thermoplastic material suitable for thin wall molding. This polycarbonate grade has easy-release properties and is an excellent choice for applications that require a durable, heat-stable material.

“When combined with Nomad’s charging products, durable, light weight Makrolon polycarbonate helps deliver a mobile charger that is fit for on-the-go lifestyles,” said Kevin Dunay, Electrical market segment leader, Polycarbonates, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
