This summer, Colorado teen writers can participate in an utterly unique writing experience at Explorati Teen Writers Boot Camp. Beginning in June, Explorati offers four-day, all-day camps to middle school or high school fiction writers, and a brand-new screenwriting track that is open to teens aged 13-18. Explorati has also partnered with Arapahoe Libraries for the first time, and will hold the camps at their administrative building at 2855 E. Adam Aircraft Circle in Engelwood, Denver.

The brainchild of event organizer and writing professor Trai Cartwright, Explorati Teens is designed to satisfy what she would have liked as a teen. “I was this kid who spent all her free time writing and there just wasn’t any support or education for someone like me back then,” said Cartwright, a youth literacy advocate. “When I started teaching writing six years ago, the idea of serving teen writers who were like I was immediately came to mind.”

At Explorati, teens are encouraged to work on their own stories and books through the camp’s trademark elevated, highly personalized, and highly social instruction. And for the first time in Denver, Explorati is offering a Screenwriting track based on her 15 years of experience as a filmmaker in Los Angeles.

“Our focus is to let the writers write whatever they want, to help them understand their strengths and give them to tools to be even better. Whatever stories they are passionate about, we get passionate about. They don’t get that opportunity very often—usually it’s a lot of prompts and writing-to-lesson. Here, it’s all about their stories.”

She also knows the transformative effects of working with others who take their passion as seriously as they do. “The support these kids give each other is incredible. They form a tribe all their own—they work together in their own writers’ groups, they boost each up online, they create these amazing connections.”

Said Katie, a middle school writer who has participated in the Boot Camp, "This was such a friendly environment, great learning and awesome people! Working with a writing teacher is important to me because they really have the finesse to help you."

Trai has an MFA in Creative Writing, and teaches Screenwriting at the Colorado Film School, Creative Writing at UNC, and worked as a development executive for a range of Hollywood movie studios. “I know a lot about what makes a story great. I know more about how to make writers of any age better.”

Explorati Teens has hosted over 250 teens from 6 states at its camps. Tuition for 2015’s summer camp is $275. Middle school dates: June 22-25; High school dates: June 29 – July 2; Screenwriting (ages 13-18) dates: July 6 - 9.
