CareerPlug Grants New Scholarship for Local Foster Children

CareerPlug announces new CareerPlug Scholars Award, a $10,000 scholarship to help a local foster child continue their education.

Austin, TX, April 15, 2015 --(PR.com)-- CareerPlug, a recruiting software company based in Austin, worked closely with Foster Angels of Central Texas to develop the CareerPlug Scholars Award. This new scholarship will be annually awarded to a local foster child. This year’s winner was chosen by CareerPlug’s employees after a review of personal essays sent in by local foster children.

While 40% of high school graduates in the United States attend college and 55.5% graduate in six years or less, only 11% of foster children will attend college and just 2.5% graduate. Foster children often lack the support, resources, and stability to succeed in their education.

Founder and President of CareerPlug, Clint Smith, first began thinking about ways to help when he learned that very few foster children were taking advantage of Texas’s Foster Care Exemption, a program that waives the college tuition of a former foster child to any state school if they are accepted on their own merit.

“I thought this was a big opportunity to help,” Smith said. “I realized that it takes a lot more than a tuition waiver to help someone prepare for college and actually graduate. First of all, these students need money for housing and other living expenses, and then they need the support. They’re pretty much on their own, and it can be a very difficult transition.”

The scholarship is just the beginning. CareerPlug plans to expand this program into a resource and mentoring program for former foster youth. “Our goals are to 1) help more former foster youth attend college and 2) help more of them graduate from college,” Smith said. “We want to help set them up for long-term success.”

"There is no value we can put on these CareerPlug scholarships because it keeps giving into future generations," said Ted Oakley, Board President of Foster Angels of Central Texas.

The award will be presented at the Fifth Annual Appreciation Luncheon on April 15th, 2015 hosted by Foster Angels of Central Texas. The luncheon, held during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, will honor Foster Children and Caseworkers in the Central Texas area.
