PBTF Supports Research Into Personalized Medicine

Asheville, NC, April 25, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is investing in a network of children’s hospitals that are researching personalized medicine for children with brain tumors.

The Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium, or PNOC, was formed to provide children with brain tumors access to innovative treatments. Its members include 90 pediatric brain tumor specialists at 11 hospitals.

The PBTF’s $500,000 grant will fund the PNOC operations center for two years, enabling more effective collaboration between members to help shorten the time from project concept to clinical trial opening.

“This funding accelerates the consortium’s pursuit of therapeutic strategies that are specific to the molecular make-up of each patient’s tumor,” said Joanne Salcido, PhD, PBTF vice president of research and family support. “It is instrumental to advancing personalized treatments in the clinic for children with brain tumors.”

“In an era where federal funding for clinical trials research has been significantly reduced, particularly for orphan or rare diseases like pediatric CNS tumors, it is gratifying to know that groups such as the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and their donor groups, are willing to step up and help support these efforts,” said Michael Prados, MD, project director for PNOC and Charles B. Wilson Endowed Chair in neurological surgery at UC San Francisco.

“The PNOC Operations Office supports the activities of 11 major institutions across the United States who have come together to bring innovative, personalized treatments to children with these devastating diseases,” Dr. Prados added. “The support of the PBTF will clearly be critical in helping us realize that vision.”
