)-- Save Our Cemeteries has announced that registration has officially opened for its annual seminar, being held this year on Saturday, May 30, 2015. The seminar is open to the general public. All proceeds will benefit Save Our Cemeteries in protecting and preserving New Orleans’ historic cemeteries.
Attendees will be able to register for the seminar as either an all-day or afternoon-only event. The all-day event (8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) will include a morning bus-tour of Metairie and Cypress Grove cemeteries, followed by lunch at Greenwood Cemetery and two lectures in the afternoon, at a cost of $50 per person. Bus reservations are limited to the first 25 individuals to register prior to May 22, 2015. For individuals interested in attending the afternoon session only (11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), SOC is offering admission at a reduced cost of $15. Boxed lunches will be available for an additional $10, with lunch beginning at 11:45am, and the first speaker beginning at 12:45pm.
This year's featured seminar speakers include Sal Serio, curator of the American Italian Research Library at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie and member and past president of the Genealogy Research Society of New Orleans, who will be presenting on family genealogical research "Cemeteries and Obituaries is a big asset in family research", and Deborah Burst, author of the recently published “Louisiana’s Sacred Places: Churches, Cemeteries and Voodoo,” will share her presentation: “Discovering Feliciana Cemeteries: From Plantation Monarchs to Civil War Heroes.”
