Tame Your Tummy with Tips for Better Health Through Portion Control

In a world where portions are growing larger and larger, it is hard to stop yourself from indulging and overeating. Limiting portions can help you lose weight, reduce intestinal issues and improve your overall health, including lowering your risk for diabetes.

St. Louis, MO, July 01, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Trick your tummy into feeling full with these five easy tricks from NurseWise, a national multilingual nurse triage and health education provider.

1. Pre-bag snacks. If you are likely to snack frequently throughout the day, divide your snacks into pre-bagged 100 calorie packs and only allow yourself two per day. Some good choices include three cups of plain popcorn, about 17 grapes, 15 mini pretzels, 10 baby carrots with two tablespoons of hummus, or half an avocado.

2. Measure portions. If you are having trouble with grasping portion sizes, measure and weigh your foods according to the servings on nutrition labels. When you eat a whole bag of snacks, you often double or triple the calorie intake.

3. Change your plate. Use portion controlled plates that indicate the serving sizes of different food groups, such as meats, vegetables and starches. Load up with one cup of veggies (preferably leafy greens), 3-4 oz. of lean meat, and 1/2 cup of starches.

4. Eat slower. It can take 15-20 minutes for the body to send signals to your brain that you are full. Enjoy the flavors of the food. Pace yourself throughout your meal and focus on chewing to slow down your eating.

5. Fill up on water. Drink a full glass of water 10 minutes before each meal. Not only is drinking enough water great for your body and well-being, but you will also feel full in less time.
