Union Township Chamber Announces Fifth Annual Mayor’s Day 5K Run

Union, NJ, August 13, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Get up, grab your running shoes and join the Union Township Chamber of Commerce again this year at its Fifth Annual Mayor’s Day 5K Run on Sunday, September 20, 2015. A committee has been actively working over the summer to plan and expand this year’s event.

Held rain or shine, the event will start at Union High School on Cooke Drive. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with the actual race commencing at 9:00 a.m. Participants will traverse a USATF – certified course beginning and ending at the high school. This year’s course is being updated and redesigned to end with a lap around the high school track with the upgraded finish line being place directly in front of the home stands.

Eugene Mitchell of Spencer Savings Bank and Hayley O’Connor of Electro-America, Inc, both of Union, have been named co-chairs of this year’s 5K.

“This year marks the fifth anniversary of this popular community event, and we are working to make it our biggest and best yet,” said Chamber Executive James Masterson. “We are grateful to the Township of Union Board of Education for generously hosting this event, and we are holding it on a Sunday this year, based upon feedback from last year.”

Prizes will be awarded for various categories, and t-shirts and gift bags will be distributed to participants.

Masterson added that a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit a local resident, 10-year-old Benjamin Duvelson of Union, who was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, and recently, avascular necrosis of the left hip, and has endured multiple hospitalizations and treatments.

“We are so pleased that Union Mayor Manuel Figueiredo shared Ben’s story with us, and we are thrilled to be able to help him in some way through this event,” Masterson said. “We encourage our community to come out in support of this boy and his family, while enjoying a fun day with their own families as well.”

This event will begin at 10:00 a.m., with registration from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The cost to participate is $5.00, payable at the gate.
