Friends of Karen's fall gala, "An Evening at Tribeca Rooftop," benefits children with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

New York, NY, October 01, 2015 --( Panoramic views of the Hudson River, the Empire State Building and Manhattan’s fashionable Tribeca will serve as the backdrop for Friends of Karen’s “An Evening at Tribeca Rooftop,” on Thursday, October 8, at Tribeca Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses Street, New York, NY at 6:30 pm. The event will honor Alessandra and Russell Hernandez and Kim and Greg Manocherian for their on-going support of the mission of Friends of Karen. Randi Kaye, Emmy Award-winning anchor and investigative reporter for CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” will be the Master of Ceremonies and singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor is the musical guest.

Friends of Karen provides vital, practical and comprehensive support, at no cost, to families in the tri-state region who are caring for a child with a life-threatening illness. Since 1978, Friends of Karen has helped nearly 14,000 children and their families with personal advocacy provided by a team of dedicated professionals – including social workers, expressive arts therapists and child life specialists – who work to ensure they have the financial, emotional and practical support they need to get through the turmoil and treatment process of a devastating diagnosis.

Russell Hernandez owns Atlantic State Development Corporation in Harrison, New York and is a partner in multiple hotels and restaurants, including The Bedford Post Inn (Bedford, NY). In 2001, he participated in the creation of the Office of Emergency Management for the town of Pound Ridge. He also serves on the Boards of the Bedford Historic Society, Neighbors Link (an organization that works to integrate immigrant families in northern Westchester County), the Pound Ridge Library and the Bedford Pound Ridge Baseball League. Alessandra Hernandez heads the volunteers for the Office of Emergency Management for the town of Pound Ridge and is an active volunteer with Friends of Karen, Neighbors Link, the Hackley School and the Pound Ridge Harvest Festival. She was formerly with Ufficio Italiano dei Cambi, the representative office for the Central Bank of Italy. Russell and Alessandra live in northern Westchester with their three children.

Greg Manocherian has a diverse professional background. He is the founder of RoeCo. LLC, a principal in The Manocherian Organization, founder of Crunch Fitness International and Florida Coastal School of Law. In 1994, he founded a private non-profit, The Roe Foundation. Kim Manocherian has practiced refugee and asylum law in New York City and served as a supervising attorney at Brooklyn Law School’s Safe Harbor Project. Kim also developed an economic empowerment program for women at Neighbors Link Northern Westchester and has served on the Neighbors Link Board since 2011. The family lives in Pound Ridge, NY.

Randi Kaye, Emmy Award-winning anchor and correspondent for CNN/U.S., will be the Master of Ceremonies. Since joining CNN in December 2004, she has covered an array of key news stories in addition to providing in-depth investigative reports. She is based in New York and is currently an investigative reporter for “Anderson Cooper 360.”

Livingston Taylor's musical career spans decades. Taylor is currently on an East Coast tour and will take a break to share his singing-songwriting talents with guests at “An Evening at Tribeca Rooftop” for Friends of Karen.

Friends of Karen began in 1978 when family friends came to the aid of a family with a 16-year-old daughter, Karen, who was terminally ill. A fund-raising campaign for medical and other costs enabled Karen to spend her precious last days at home surrounded by loving family and friends.

More than 37 years later, Friends of Karen has helped nearly 14,000 children in the tri-state region, from birth to age 21, who have been diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Support includes emotional assistance to help parents and other family members cope with the confusion and turmoil; financial assistance, which may include medical expenses, including insurance co-payments and premiums, living expenses such as food, rent and utilities; and advocacy and assistance with issues concerning treatment, insurance and education.

Friends of Karen works to ensure that families are able to maintain a sense of balance and stability even in the midst of a health crisis. The need for their services continues every day.
